What is a Harvest Moon?

You may have heard the tales of the famous Harvest Moon: a Moon that shines brightly to guide farmers through the harvest season. But is the Harvest Moon real, or just a myth? Today, we’re diving into the science of this beautiful Moon and when you can spot it in 2026!
What is the Harvest Moon?
The term “Harvest Moon” refers to the bright, full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. For several nights, the Moon rises soon after the Sun sets, creating bright moonlight early in the evening. Before electricity, this abundance of light let farmers work later in the day, giving them extra time to harvest crops, which are often at their peak at the end of summer, right before fall. Hence, the name Harvest Moon! Unlike other full moons that rise about 50 minutes later each night, the harvest moon rises only 25 to 30 minutes later on consecutive evenings in mid-northern latitudes.
When is the Harvest Moon in 2026?
According to the Farmer’s Almanac, this year’s bright, full harvest moon will happen on Saturday, September 26th. It will reach its full illumination at 12:49 p.m. and will appear for three days!
Why Does the Harvest Moon Happen?
As the Moon circles Earth, the amount of sunlight we see changes, causing different moon phases. When the Moon is full, it is sitting directly opposite the Sun, rising around sunset and setting around sunrise. On any two successive nights, moonrise varies by about 50 minutes.
That 50-minute change from day to day is related to the angle of the Moon’s orbit with respect to Earth’s equator. Around the autumn equinox, this 50-minute time period shrinks to only about 20 minutes. So, the Moon is rising further north each day. For those north of the equator, following moonrises will appear closer together and for longer. This is because the Moon’s orbit is tilted the smallest amount relative to the horizon. So, it appears almost parallel with the horizon at this time.
Whether you’re a farmer, an astronomer, or just a curious Lancastrian, the Harvest Moon is a beautiful time of year to celebrate a successful harvest season in Lancaster’s abundant farmland and enjoy the sight of a beautiful, bright Moon.
