Mint

About Mint

Grow mint in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. It’s best to grow mint in a pot as it can compete with neighbouring plants when planted in the ground. Harvest when you need to.

Cucumber

Cucumbers will grow quickly with little care. Be sure they receive an inch of water every week. Cucumbers need a good amount of sunlight, generally 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Cilantro

About Cilantro

To care for cilantro, ensure it receives ample sunlight, keep the soil moist but not soggy, and provide shade during the hottest parts of the day. Regular watering, good drainage, and protection from bolting are also crucial for a healthy and productive cilantro plant.

Tomatoes

To care for tomato plants, provide them with consistent moisture, plenty of sunlight, and good drainage. Fertilize regularly and prune as needed to promote healthy growth and fruiting.

Parsley

To care for parsley, ensure it receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily and maintain consistently moist, well-drained soil. Harvest parsley by snipping off the outer stalks near the base, which encourages new growth.

Thyme

Thyme is a hardy herb that thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, requiring minimal watering once established. It benefits from pruning to promote new growth and maintain a compact shape.

Begonia

About Begonia

Begonias thrive with consistent moisture, well-draining soil, and bright, indirect light. They also benefit from regular feeding and deadheading to encourage continuous blooming.

Rosemary

About Rosemary

To keep your rosemary plant healthy, provide it with plenty of sunlight, well-drained soil, and be sure to water it when the top inch of soil feels dry. Regular pruning encourages bushier growth, and occasional fertilization can boost its health.

Eggplant

Eggplants require a sunny location, fertile, well-drained soil, and consistent moisture for optimal growth and fruit production. They thrive in warm temperatures.

Basil

About Basil

To keep your basil thriving, provide it with ample sunlight, maintain slightly moist soil without overwatering, and regularly prune it to encourage growth and prevent flowering. Basil prefers warm temperatures and can be grown in containers or in-ground, ensuring good drainage.

Bell Peppers

About Bell Peppers

To care for bell peppers, ensure they get ample sunlight, water consistently, use well-drained soil, and provide adequate nutrients through fertilizer or compost. Plant in a location with full sun, and water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry.

Catnip

About Catnip

Catnip thrives with proper sunlight, well-drained soil, and minimal watering once established. It also benefits from regular deadheading to encourage continued blooming and a tidy appearance.

Kale

About Kale

To care for kale, provide it with at least 5-6 hours of sunlight, well-drained soil, and consistent moisture, about 1-1.5 inches of water per week.

Mikaela | Communication Manager 
This year, Mikaela will be planting mint, cucumber, and tomatoes. While she loves to plant all of these veggies, she’s most excited about mint, as she loves to make homemade meadow tea in the summers! 
 
Chandra | Communication Specialist 
Chandra likes to plant herbs, veggies, and flowers in raised beds on her porch. This spring, she’s growing tomatoes, cilantro, and begonias. Tomatoes are her favorite, as they’re fairly easy to maintain and she loves to use them in salads! She also likes to feed them to her guinea pigs, Willie and Joey. 
 
Laura | Land Protecting & GIS Specialist 
Laura is LFT’s resident “plant person!” She loves both indoor and outdoor plants and enjoys a porch garden every year. She’s planting cilantro, parsley, thyme, rosemary, and eggplant. Herbs are Laura’s favorite things to plant, as she loves using them while cooking. 
 
Steph | Community Engagement Manager 
Steph is venturing into growing from seed this spring season! She’s planting baby eggplant, snack cucumbers, salad mix, cherry tomatoes, kale, cilantro, basil, various peppers, parsley, and catnip! She’s excited to transfer all her seedlings to her backyard garden, and she’s most excited about the taste of homegrown tomatoes. Her cats, Kat and Scott, are most excited to indulge in fresh catnip!
