What’s in Season This May?

One of the best (and most delicious) benefits of preserving farmland is protecting access to local food. Eating seasonal, local fruits and veggies not only helps the environment by limiting transportation emissions, but also boosts overall health. Studies show that locally-grown seasonal produce is higher in nutrients and often denser in flavor, making dishes healthier and yummier! So, head to your local markets in May to pick up these delicious and nutritious goodies:
1. Lettuce
Various types of lettuce are in season from mid-May to October, including butterhead, romaine, and loose-leaf lettuces. Different types of lettuces have varying health benefits, but most are known for boosting hydration and eye health through abundant levels of water and vitamin A.
2. Radishes
Radish season in PA is May to early fall, with harvests peaking in late May. Radishes are abundant in calcium, vitamin C, antioxidants, and more, promoting cell health, healthy digestion, liver function, and more.
3. Asparagus
While asparagus is in season from May to June, harvests peak in May in Lancaster. Asparagus is high in various antioxidants, vitamin K, and fiber, boosting bone health, reducing cellular damage, and supporting healthy immunity.
4. Green onions
Green onions are available from May to September in PA. Particularly high in phytonutrients and vitamin C, green onions help to prevent infections, lower the risk of disease, and boost immunity.
5. Rhubarb

Remember that many local stands accept cash or checks only, so stop by an ATM before visiting! As always, never take photos of our Amish or Plain-Sect community members. Visitors are often welcome to take pictures of the produce or farm property, as long as faces are not recognizable.
